That's neat!

I'm hoping that by the time I adopt VR, the headset will look like a Daft Punk head gear.

So far the only plugin I use is Crew Chief. no other on screen plugins work for DX11 yet.

And using the Rift in the race was awesome.

Chad, glad the Rift worked well for you in the race. Did you find it better than having "look left" and "look right" buttons? I ask because I know you are used to using those commands. When I started, I only did a handful of races before I started using the Rift. I hadn't even mapped the look buttons yet.
Have you set up voice commands for Crew Chief yet? I haven't, but I think that would be the way to go so that you can ask for gaps, tire temps, fuel left etc whenever you want without having to break immersion to look at a "floating" display.

I found that the look left and right buttons were useless, as in they didn't even work anymore. The look behind still works as before. I was used to having triple screens so I rarely had to use the look commands. I already was able to see peripherally any cars next to me. I should find a new thing to map there... Maybe Fuel mixture.

I have setup voice commands but I find I dont ask the right questions or I dont ask them correctly. I typically can't get a response back on a lot of the questions I ask such as, "What's my time to the next car?", or "What is my lead on the following car?" I also haven't really dedicated much time to figuring out how to ask the questions, so some of it is on me.

I started getting two different errors.
- Power surge on the USB
- HDMI cable not detected
After researching for a few hours and thinking about trying some of the solutions listed in various forums, I found the source of my problems.
My cat has been chewing on the headset cord and actually severed some of the wire strands inside!
Luckily, you can replace the cord only rather than the entire Rift headset. Cat just cost me $50!
I'm going to take it out of his food allowance.

More proof that cats are always trying to kill their owners (Attempting to electrocute you.)

My son has been on my headset a lot and being able to replace the cable is a great thing. I can see my cable getting bunched up and twisted more and more over time. I expect that I will eventually have to replace it due to a break.

Still for anyone looking to get into VR this Rift is f'ing amazing. Especially at the $400.00 price point. Just make sure you have a decent system. My top end computer from 3 years ago (FX8320 OC@ 4.0 GHz and R9 290) is barely pushing consistent frame rates over long play sessions.

I agree, I have a i5 OC'd to 4.2 and a OC'd GTX 970 and it runs OK but I am going to update to a GTX1080 at least after the first of the year.
I'm also looking at building a new system when the I7 Gen 8 become more available and setup as my racing rig and use the current system for Elite Dangerous.  It's getting old moving the steering wheel out of the way and hooking up the HOTAS every time I want to play ED then back again to race.
I have built my own systems since the late 90's but I have always had to budget for not quite the best but some kind of compromise.  Usually not the latest greatest.  Not this time, I want to build the best that is available in the first 1/4 of 2018 dagnabit!  ;D
Now, what can I sell?  ;D

Just for reference, my system is not scratch built. I have an Alienware Aurora R6. i7-7700 CPU. GTX1080ti GPU. It runs rock solid... except for the occasional cat. Yes Chad, very good design on Oculus part that the cable can be replaced!

Gerry

I started building my own computers since the very early 2000's. I, like you Gerry, have always had to compromise on parts to afford the most bang for buck. The system I currently have cost me $1100.00 to build. That by far was the most I have ever spent on a build that was my own. I typically spent $600-$700 every couple of years, so considering the cost to build over time I am about due for an update. Just not sure when I'll have the coin for a new computer. Time to sell a Kidney.

For anyone who has taken the plunge into the Rift I am looking to add some friends to my Oculus Rift friends list. You can look me up by either my real name or my handle "Depco". At this point I only am for sure aware of Gerry having a rift. I looked up his name and Oculus said no person by that name.

I also have the problem of my wheel being in the way of my Hotas :p My wheel is firmly attached to my rig so I have no option to move it out of the way. I have tried placing my hotas on my narrow keyboard plate, not an ideal solution.
