Title: New Racer
Post by: Jan van Lier on March 15, 2017, 09:10:46 pm
Hey peoples,

My name is Jan van Lier and I'm new to the PC racing world. Been doing Project CARS on Xbox One for the last couple of years (well, since it was released) and just got a PC rig that can run R Factor 2.

No idea how well I'll do in a proper league situation against other racers but I usually finished semi decently on random online Pcars races. I have been practicing on Rfactor 2 for a couple weeks and I already like it much better.

Looking forward to getting some laps in, improving my skills, and meeting some other fellow motorheads. Any tips on how to begin would be appreciated because I literally just signed up and have no idea what to do next.

Location: SF Bay
Home track: Laguna Seca
Setup: i7 6700, 1060GTX 3 GB, 16G ram
Thrustmaster TX, Playseat Evo

THANKS!!! :)

Hi and welcome we have a server up with the URD mod.
and fun run server but cars bit of a beast top drive :)
it is a paid mod but not too much mular and loads of fun worth every penny. the other mods on page are just as good.

https://www.unitedracingdesign.net/rfactor-2

its the EGT 2015 mod we will be racing this next :)

Best bet do loads of laps don't pay too much attention about the lap times on our server we have some very fast guys.

RF2 Ai is not too bad add 10 cars set Ai to 95% try to beat them then up Ai to 100% do same :)

Hopefully see you on track if you grab the URD mod :)

Thanks Simon! I'll grab the mods and jump in the server. Might try a few practice laps just in case I have a chance to save myself some embarrassment :)

See you there

Finally another Bay Area racer! Jan I will have to take you under my wing. I am your Mama now and you will be my baby bird. Don't worry it's just an analogy....kind of. All these Canadians signing up in rapid succession has me wanting to toss my cookies. I'm so happy to have another Californian with me. So long everyone I used to have alliance with. So long you sons of b!tches!!! Salvation at last!!!

Great Michael, as long as you won't be trying to feed me like a mama bird we should be good!!

Just moved back to CA after stints in Philly and Denver, but attended high school 2 miles from Laguna Seca and grew up going to many events there. REALLY excited to be back, and very stoked to start racing online more.

I'll be on the server (provided it's up) later tonight posting laps. Just figured out how to edit my name.

Also want to give a shout out to Jimmy Broadbent, his YouTube videos definitely pushed me over the edge to get more involved in RF2

Cheers!!

Well the whole point of me saying that was so I could feed you like a mama bird so forget the whole thing!!!

Michael has a tantrum and runs off crying

Welcome Jen,
Don't pay Michael any attention. I would suggest that he might be a bit of a drama queen but then he would get upset and go screaming off to his room and slam the door.  ;) lol

Hope to see you on the track soon.

LOL!

And thanks also Chad.

Bout to jump on the server and turn some (probably pathetically slow) laps.

Looks like something happened to the server. If it comes back up I'll be back on. Nice to see you guys briefly Tom and Michael :)

Hi Jan and welcome!

Xbox one owner here too since two months :P I mostly do my gaming with PC.

Good choice of a wheel. I have T500RS which is older than your wheel but still very good.

Feel free to look around at the forums and ask questions/make suggestions if you have any. VRC business board has our previous official event results in it (also the shoutbox in the right). Our history goes back further than you can see. Some of the members have raced together for about two years already I think. I've been racing rf2 since 7/2012 (wow how time flys).

We have a great group here and I believe there can never be too much members. A lot of fast driver around here but not only aliens, I do believe you will find somebody with a matching level. I'm usually somewhere in the middle. We have a lot of talent here other than in racing area also. Tom makes us race recap videos (they are fun to watch...also Jean-Simon works with this stuff), Simon and Melly Mem knows something about making skins and other artistic stuff, Michael is (or trying to be :D) helpful, me and Chad take care of administration. I also bring results, update points and try to spread the word (please feel free to tell us to your racing friends :) ). There are many drivers here from who you can learn a lot and they are friendly and willing to help you if needed. Everyone are a valuable member of this league and part of making the racing great.

We are relaxed group that don't take racing too seriously. Still, this hobby is important to us and we value having fun while doing it. Clean racing is important (see the rules), it makes having fun possible. We do compete so it's not only fun runs but a friendly atmosphere all around is our thing.

Not sure what's up with the URD server, but try GTO server in the meantime ;)

See you on track!

I just crawled out of bed. I'll check on the server. They crash occasionally if I don't restart them every few days.

Jan we must have blown up the server! Two good looking badass racers from the Bay Area is too much for any server. I guess we have to alternate who is online at any given time.

I only watched you for a short bit but you look good. Clean lines. Just need to practice some and pick up pace steadily which comes with more practice.

See you next time! Be hungry for Mama bird!

Welcome Jan!

I'm very new here, but these guys are nothing but class. The racing is tons of fun.

See you on track!

Great! I'm excited. Had fun for sure, though it's always different in a live situation. Getting a bit more familiar with the cars, and luckily Sebring is one of my favorite tracks.

See you guys out there!

Michael: seriously, like 2 laps in and boom! I was thinking the same thing. 😂

Help!!
Just got the 599xx rim for my TX wheel and after installing it the buttons no longer work. Tried to reinstall the standard rim and the buttons don't work there either, including shifter paddles.

There are literally no videos on how to install this thing and the manual tells me to tighten the "installation screw" on the base, which I cannot find.

Super bummed, can't run until I fix this. :(

Ok so my installation screw is just missing, but that shouldn't affect anything since I never had one to begin with (bought the TX used).
Pretty sure I'm installing it properly, just some weird problem. I contacted support. I would guess faulty rim, except my old one doesn't work anymore either.
No racing for now :(

Sorry to hear that Jan. Hopefully there is a sloution.

I'm not technically talented so I have stayed away from those modifications even though I would have wanted f1 style wheel also.

If it's a button issue my best guess is that the connector that you use to connect the wires from the wheel to the paste is either it connected improperly or not at all.

Just a stab in the dark...
Not sure if your base is like mine but is there a mode switch on the left lower side of the base, two positions, PS4 and PS3.  The switch should be in PS3 position for use with a PC.  If it is in PS4 nothing will work in the game controller wise.  You need to plug the usb back in after moving the switch to make it work.

Hey guys thank you all so much.

You were right, it was the connector. The quick release for some reason wasn't lining up properly and it wasn't fully connecting the rim to the base.

All fixed now and ready to go! :)

Starting to get a bit quicker... Here and there I pull out a lap that surprises me. In the races just working on not crashing and staying out of the fast people's way.

How are you doing? Which car did you choose?
