Title: Driving Views and Simracing

I was sitting at work and thinking about Michael F's offer to teach us some lessons (He does it on every Sunday, but he was offering to do it on a Saturday and not in a race setting...) This got me to thinking about situational awareness and making sure when you know there is someone next to you or you are clear to move onto another line. I thought about the look left right and back buttons I have mapped and how I rarely use the look left and right features and rely on my mirrors instead. This got me to thinking about how console racers tend to have better awareness due to the alternate views they tend to use. This then led to me wondering about the couple of drivers I know who use controllers and chase cams for driving. This ultimately led me to wonder how many of our drivers use each listed view.

Whew that was the long way around to getting to how this poll started. In any case, list what view you use to race in VRC and rF2 in general.

I always try for as authentic as i can. So cockpit view with as little info on the screen as i can... Plus virtual mirrors because i cant see my mirrors on single screen. If I could, i wouldnt use the virtual ones

Always cockpit view for ages now since i got a wheel anyhow.
 but used to use bumper cam type with controller. took few day when i swapped prefer cockpit as cant see around you in bumper view plus cockpit feels right.

In my opinion mirrors are insufficient for knowing what's around you, so everyone should map look left/right if possible. Also rear view mirror shows car further behind than they really are so I sometimes use look behind. VR would be good, but considering the price, size, current technical specs and beast machine you need to have, it's probably ~2-3 years away for me.

I use bumper cam for ages now, plus virtual mirrors.
I have the rear view mapped on my wheel and I use it quite often, as you said virtual mirrors does not help that much.

Also I have all hud information off except for gear, speed, revs and fuel level.

I easily get distracted by any more information (laptimes, splittimes or running order for example) than those above.
But I do have another button mapped to show and have a short look (wear level of tyres mostly) on it on a straight.

I am faster without those information, so I can focus more on driving and "feeling" the limit.

Interesting post...

I use the bonnet cam, virtual mirrors and have D Pad mapped to look left right and behind.. can also look sort of diagonally behind aswell with D Pad, ive also mapped 2 buttons to look left and right on steering wheel which i can use just about anywhere on the track but the D Pad is for on the long straights because it takes my hand away from the flappy paddel gear change, G27 has D Pad on the shifter.. still getting used to this setup since ive had a couple of incidents with Palla and Tech G

i almost went and bought 2 more monitors last weekend.
the more i get into it the more i will spend on STUFF.
I love the races we have on sundays but the only thing thats holding me back from ploughing some more money into it is that i feel quite lonely through the week, kinda boring doing 6000 laps on my own

i use window licker cam, sort of cockpit as close to the bonnet cuz single screen.
right now im going minimalist with the HUD only using wedge hud. fuel, laps, gaps i think and i cycle the rf2 display for particular stuff.
i do rely in the hud gear indicator as i go so close i cant read the motec and sometimes i forget which gear im using :p

In car. Single monitor. No plugins. No cheats on screen like cheat map or whatever MFer said. All talent and general good looks.

It's supposed to be a simulation of a race car, so if you race your actual race car on the bumper or on the roof or on the dash board ....  good for you. I think most race car drivers sit in the cockpit. I'm not a real race car driver but I pretend by using the cockpit view.

I also change the FOV per track to get the best view of what the track surface looks like. Very important to be able to anticipate what to do, rather than react to turns, brows, etc... that are hard to decipher till you're right on top of them.

Cockpit view, around 52 as my FOV on an ultrawide monitor. I can usually see most of my left side mirror and in the BMW I don't use virtual mirrors because the BMW rear view mirror is friggin MASSIVE.

I use crewchief as a spotter but other than that nothing.

I have look left right and behind mapped to d pad plus virtual mirrors on. use 29 to 35 FOV at 5760 x 1200
3 screens fairly good at seeing people that along side you
 my Z1 dash flashes blue round edge when someone is approaching too

Flashing feature sounds good Simon. I use FOV 40. Not sure if it's ideal but it is what I'm use to. I have one 144Hz gaming screen, not sure if it's 24" or 27", probably 24... Would be interested to get widescreen, not really interested of 3 screen setup because all the hassle involved.

It's always an interesting debate with the authentic/realism aspect of sim racing, but what you have to remember is its not real, as there are a number of key elements missing such as, unless you have VR you are not able to easily look left or right, and you have no peripheral vision, you have no seat of the pants feeling, no pit crew or messages being relayed to you about all the key things you need in a race, no one helping you with setup, etc, etc.

Which is why I really, really miss track map, the delta time plugin and the radar plug in which visually show you the location of cars around you.  This aid help make sim racing much safe and in my opinion more realistic as they compensate a little for the information you are not getting.

Having said all that, I have  a dual monitor setup (3800 x 1080) with FOV at around 30 and I drive cockpit view, with my seat move forward so I don't see the steering wheel, as I already have one in front of me.  But I think any view or aid that helps give you more awareness of your surroundings and what the car is actually doing can only be a good thing, imho  ;).

Cockpit with FOV somewhere around 30-35, depending on car and game so I get roughly the same size steering wheel in the game as my real one. Sometimes I raise the virtual camera height because I'm tall and I'm used to seeing a lot though it's not well represented in a single-monitor setup.

When I played racing "games" it was bumper view. But when I started racing "sims" (Grand Prix, rF, rF2), its always been cockpit view for more realism. I will say that with a single monitor I sometimes questioned using most of the 1920x1080 display just to see a dashboard and rollcage with only about 800x600 actually showing what was outside the car. But thats what I stuck with.
Recently though I have switched to an Oculus Rift. So now its cockpit view all the way. The resolution is nowhere near what you triple screen fellas are used to. But for me, I can get by the "screendoor" effect and feel immersed. Coming from a single monitor placed at the back edge of the desk, it actually feels like a much wider field of view. I think it kind of imitates wearing a helmet which restricts your peripheral vision slightly. I dont use virtual mirrors. I use the real mirrors. And in VR, you really adjust the seat and mirrors just like a real car. I had to map all those buttons as I had never used them before!
Currently in rF2 VR, the info displays are pretty far outside your forward view. So you have to look down into the car or up into the roof to see some info. For me I find this even more realistic as I have to wait for a long straight to check on things. I dont have any addins yet but I want to add an audio one like Crewchief to complete my realistic setup.

One 55" monitor (TV), cockpit view at 28 FOV, left/right/back mapped, triple mirror and as many distracting windows and plug ins on screen as possible.
