General Discussion / Re: First Impression Oculus Rift
« on: October 20, 2017, 12:03:09 pm »
For anyone who has taken the plunge into the Rift I am looking to add some friends to my Oculus Rift friends list. You can look me up by either my real name or my handle "Depco". At this point I only am for sure aware of Gerry having a rift. I looked up his name and Oculus said no person by that name.

I'm not sure if I ever completed my registration to the Oculus app.  Seems like I may have gotten as far as having to create a PIN number?  Or just after and it was asking me a lot of questions and too involved, I just wanted to get to playing with the device, not all this Facebook get my inf to sell virtual paperwork sh*te.  ;D  If had created a handle or username it would be lotus23bsr.
I'm at work now but I'll look into it tonight and see if I completed the reg. process and see if I can find you.
Gerry

I also have the problem of my wheel being in the way of my Hotas :p My wheel is firmly attached to my rig so I have no option to move it out of the way. I have tried placing my hotas on my narrow keyboard plate, not an ideal solution.

Yes, that does sound precarious.
I have wanted for a long time to design and build a real sim racing rig with an actual racing seat and a nice frame made out of 8020 components and away to easily swing the hotas into position and back out the way when not being used.  Just need money and time  :)
I am going to retire in a year so maybe I'll have time then LOL.

You need to manually update your installation rfactor 2 to version 1109. You do that in the same way that you opt into the Beta.

Ah, ok.  didn't realize you had to do it manually, was waiting for Steam to do something last night.
Thanks Chad

Gerry, you will find the track version and download link to the track from our even post.

Btw, I didn't do any manual update but I'm in dx9 still. I had to download and install the track manualky to enter the server for some reason.

OK, thanks Matt.  I'll try that if the opt into build 1109 or what ever it is doesn't work.

I did some more testing and tweaking last night.  I mostly concentrated on RFactor2 and got that to look pretty good and run in pretty much 85 to 90 FPS consistently.
I only had time to do some initial settings in PCars 2.  Still looks a little rough and I'm getting some white flashes that are momentary loss of frame rate and it drops you back to Oculus Home or something for a nano-second... need to study it more.

It can be difficult to track down accurate info when the two forum threads (Studio 397 and PCars 2) for setting up VR is ~35 pages long, lot's of reading  :)

Hey Chad,
The only time I got stuttering was on one of the Spa versions that was on the server last week.

I had stuttering at the grid on a track a few weeks ago but it smoothed out by the 2nd or 3rd corner.

My problem has been how low I need to adjust the display settings to get good frame rates and I had a lot of "shimmering",  Fences, track side objects, especially light poles, they were like barbers poles.
Distance ahead and reading brake markers and other track side signs and stuff were hard to read.
And the cars don't look very good

I ran SS at 1.00, I tried 1.1 and 1.2 but didn't really notice a big difference between them so I stuck with 1.0 just to give me some headroom.

It's tough now to go back to a monitor after using VR for this short period of time.  So I'm hoping that this 1080 will help... and so far it looks better... I just installed and set it up a short time ago.  I tried Spa in single player for about half a lap and it was... quite? a difference?  Maybe, hope so, need to run it longer.
Tried to join the server but join is grayed out with "Wrong Version" in red above.
Just came on here to see if there instruction or info on what all the different Blackwoods are about :-)

Haven' tried it in PCars 2 yet.  Lot's of testing to do, I think I feel a cold and might have to call in tomorrow ;D

Well, with all the stuttering I was getting at Spa before Chad loaded the version we raced on and also I am not completely happy with my performance with VR in RF2 and PC2 I have ordered a new graphics card.  Was gonna wait till next year but I can't stand it anymore.
This is the card I ordered https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814487319
I was going to get a GTX1080Ti but I settled on the GTX1080 just to save a couple hundred bucks.  I don't think the difference in performance is that great for the amount of additional money the 1080Ti's go for.
If this does not substantially improve the visuals and frame rate in RF2 and PC2 I will be selling my Rift and putting the money towards two new monitors to go with my 21:9 LG wide screen and wait for the next gen of VR to come out before going down that road again.
Gerry

The Ti version has substantially more CUDA cores (3584 vs 2560). Is it worth $200? In my opinion, yes.

I do GPU computations on large data sets, using "headless" GPUs. They can't build them with too many cores, IMO. More IS better. Especially pushing triple 21:9. So many pixels.

FWIW

You are right, but there are a few other things I needed to consider.  I only have a Z97 MB and a i5-4690K 3.5 GHz.  I think I would bottleneck a 1080Ti.  Heck, I'm probably going to bottle neck the 1080  :)
I am hoping to build a new system in the first 1/4 of 2018, maybe there will be the newer Nvidia cards available at that time.
So I just wanted to see if I could improve VR performance on my current system with out spending too much money.

Still for anyone looking to get into VR this Rift is f'ing amazing. Especially at the $400.00 price point. Just make sure you have a decent system. My top end computer from 3 years ago (FX8320 OC@ 4.0 GHz and R9 290) is barely pushing consistent frame rates over long play sessions.

I agree, I have a i5 OC'd to 4.2 and a OC'd GTX 970 and it runs OK but I am going to update to a GTX1080 at least after the first of the year.
I'm also looking at building a new system when the I7 Gen 8 become more available and setup as my racing rig and use the current system for Elite Dangerous.  It's getting old moving the steering wheel out of the way and hooking up the HOTAS every time I want to play ED then back again to race.
I have built my own systems since the late 90's but I have always had to budget for not quite the best but some kind of compromise.  Usually not the latest greatest.  Not this time, I want to build the best that is available in the first 1/4 of 2018 dagnabit!  ;D
Now, what can I sell?  ;D

I have been watching SC for a while, I gave them some money back in 2015 I am embarrassed to say.
This article talks about where things are as of Sept. 2017
http://www.alphr.com/games/1005750/star-citizen-release-date-and-news-everything-you-need-to-know
I don't think it will happen in the same form I was sold on back in 2015.

So I ended up buying Asus ROG Strix gtx 1080 8G gpu. Delivery takes some time so I probably still race few races with the old card. I hope the new card does it's job (giving me solid over 144 fps all the time, does handle Star Citizen and handles VR when I'm ready for it).

Oh man, I'm Jealous  ;D
Grats Matt!

Thrustmaster T 300 with Alcantara Ferrari wheel. Not high end like Simons or Wyatts wheel but as good or even better than my Fanatec CSR elite wheel
Scott, I have the same wheel, what Jack Spade file are you using?
I have had PCars2 since the 22nd but just now downloaded the Jack Spade files.
Need to give them a try, just wondering which one you preferred generally?
Thanks,
Gerry

Matt,
I have been looking out for the price to come down on a GTX 1080 and 1080Ti
Looking just know on Newegg's web site I found this sale on a EVGA GTX 1080 (I have always been partial to EVGA, I think they are good cards).
Check it out...
