Tarheel Dan Here
« on: February 19, 2017, 11:19:36 pm »
Introducing myself.

Trying to develop skills. Want to race real people, but I'm afraid I'd be unsafe.

Kind of flailing, trying to decide where to focus my efforts. I'm partial to rf2, because "everybody" says it's the most realistic, but it has its drawbacks, which I won't repeat here.

I was led to this site, due to the fact that there are mods, if I understand correctly, specifically designed for competition in this league/club.

https://www.unitedracingdesign.net/rfactor-2

Am I understanding this correctly?

Anyway, if someone could explain things to me a bit, and suggest cars to drive, and tracks to learn, I'd be grateful.

Thanks,
Tarheel Dan

P.S. Just like with any hobby, trying to read the right things on the internet is like drinking from a fire hose. Any recommendations to point me in the right direction for learning by reading, would be appreciated.

Hi Dan,

Where to begin?

What is your current level of skill in Driving sims? What have you driven before? What kind of hardware have you got? (Wheel?, Controller? Keyboard and mouse?)

With regard to URD content, it is worth every penny you pay for it. It currently is the only payware I am aware of. I would start with their EGT content. The T5 is no longer being developed but the EGT and PX content is still under development and gets periodic updates.

We use the APEX mod content. It is very good for GT3 content and we probably will stick with it since not everyone has EGT and the Simtek Mod has some questionable origins. But if you dont have any personal hangups with possibly swiped content then they are a fine group of cars as well.

Take your pick of tracks. Any of the tracks we have used in this series are available from my dropbox account. Each track is linked in the races information page.

I am sure a better list can be posted by one of our seasoned drivers and posters.

In the end I would suggest trying all of the content you can come across. Yoiu will find the mods and tracks you enjoy right off the bat. Once you have discovered the mods you enjoy you can develop your driving style based on the cars you like (BTCC, GT3, F!, Stock Car, Etc.)

Good luck with your sim racing career. Ask any more questions you can think of. We are here to assist. Also feel free to join our weekly race server (VRC GT3 Series) to post some laps and times. See how you measure up to experienced and not so experienced drivers.

~Chad

My setup is a good one. i7-3960, 16GB RAM, dual GTX1070, triple 1080p.
Thrustmaster T500RS wheel. Fanatec CSR Elite pedals. Fanatec Clubsport shifter.

I started out with Forza 4, but it took me several years of stopping and starting to actually finish building my cockpit. After that, there wasn't much online racing going on, and the current gen consoles don't support triple screens, so I decided to make the switch to PC.

I think at this point, I'm gravitating toward GT3 cars. Can't decide whether I'm a Porsche or Ferrari guy.

I've downloaded the APEX mod, and will be trying that out tonight.

You mentioned having tracks on your dropbox. I looked at your profile, but i didn't see a link there. Would you mind sending?

Thanks,
Tarheel Dan

Hi Tarheel Dan,

We have some links in here: http://vrc.createaforum.com/vrc-events/

Under each thread is a link to the track we raced on.

T500RS is a good wheel. You have a nice rig there.

I assume you have the Steam version of rf2... you get plenty of good tracks to start with. 3PA tracks are 3rd party but they are also good. There is rarely any really bad tracks floating around anymore. We always use quality content on our servers.

With Apex mod it's good to remember that default setup isn't usually any good. It can feel safe to drive, not always, but it rarely is fast.

Jump on our server and you can at least see how your pace compares to others.

See you on track!

Car setup has always frustrated me. It's not that I don't have comprehension of the adjustments, and what they are supposed to do, it's that it isn't fun for me, and takes so much time. I just like to drive.

In the world of competition, setups are like secret sauce, so the aren't widely available. Unless someone can tell me otherwise?

Any pointers on the APEX setups? Specifically, Porsche?

Tarheel Dan

P.S. Should this conversation continue as it is, with me posing newbie questions, or should I start threads elsewhere?

Hey, Dan, welcome to the VRC.

I think the setups are an important aspect of this style of racing. The series is quite cool in that you stay with the same car and really learn how to set it up for the quickest lap or laps on any particular track. Come up with a method during practice to dial in the car; the more you do this the faster the process will come.

Keep asking. I may move the thread eventually. I'll see where this goes.

Setups? I am not good at them either. But I accept my lack of knowledge and try my best. I am not into racing to try and take first place. I don't have that kind of talent or time. I race for the enjoyment of competing with drivers of my own skill level. or at least with drivers around me (Typically trying to get past me)

But luckily there are guys here who are more knowledgeable about setups and such. If you see one on the server and ask they will usually give you the set they are working on.

What do I have to do to drive laps on the server to post times?

Do I need to register here:

http://virtualracingchampionship.liveracers.com/Account/Register

If so, what should I do about the "Domain" field on the form?

Separate question:

Does the server run the APEX mod exclusively? Before finding this group, I had been trying out the EnduRacers mod. Have only tried the Flat 6. It was fun, and the skins are pretty, both outside, and in the cockpit. APEX not as pretty, but if I really want pretty, I can go to another sim title.

What led me here, though, was mention of this group in association with the URD mods, which I have purchased, but not yet driven. Do you guys ever run these?

That's all for now.

Thanks,
Tarheel Dan

Hey! To run laps on the server just search for it in the online lobby. it is not locked during the week. You can check the server laptimes by clicki g on the Liveracer icon on the top left of this screen.

As for URD, if I had my way we would use that mod because it is excellent. I love how balanced it is, it has multiple tire compounds, the aero to drag seems much more balanced, as does car speed and the feel and look of the cars seem a bit better. I like the Apex mod, but URD is superior in my opinion. I think Rfactor 2 owners need to accept the new reality and that is: paid content is here to stay so accept it.

Looking forward to seeing you on track!

We (through another league) have run URD. I really like their content. I think one of the reasons we chose APEX was how it handles and the variety of cars in the mod. URD has the downside of being a paid mod so not every member had it at the time we made our decision to go with APEX. I'm certainly not against using it, but again it would require a strong desire from our members to move away from APEX to it. That is why we need the membership to speak up about decisions for the next series while the planning is going on.

My TrackIR came in the UPS today. Very subtle effect, but nice.

I've been driving nothing but Silverstone for the longest time; tonight with the APEX Mercedes, which was weird to me, and the Porsche, which seemed very easy to drive.

I mentioned the EnduRacer mod, previously. Anyone care to comment on that? I have driven the Flat 6 quite a bit. Very difficult, but enjoyable.

Maybe tomorrow night I'll try some laps on the server.

I agree with you that the Apex Porsche (as well as Ferrari and McLaren) are extremely easy to drive. You don't even need assists in them.

The Camaro presents the biggest challenge (not surprising that no one selected it). The other cars are a bit more difficult to drive.

I have to disagree about the Flat 6 from Enduracers... that car is not realistic. From the ridiculous slip angles it will allow you to easily hold, to the downshift cheat, it just feels awful to me. It looks so good though and the interior, exterior and skins are such eye candy. But I care most about how a car feels, and to me it feels wrong. Just my opinion though.

I should add that I have not tried version 2.0 of the flat 6... they may have corrected the issues. version 1 felt wrong. I don't see many leagues running it so maybe they didn't fix the issues. I would be willing to run a race with it and give it a fair re-try.

I have a feeling that version 2 of Flat 6 is not like the previous one, Marketcrash. Granted, I'm inexperienced, but it seems to me that holding ridiculous slip angles would make it easy to drive. Apex Porsche is much easier for me.

Give it a try, and see what you think.
