Considering new GPU
« on: September 19, 2017, 10:30:07 am »
I have gtx 970 currently which runs rf2 nicely 1080p single screen full/high settings ~120 fps.

Still, a future proof option would be nice to also play more heavier games and possibly VR.

I'm considering gtx 1080 series:

What do you think of these options?:

Gigabyte GeForce GTX 1080 WindForce OC 8G 599€ (euros)

ASUS GEFORCE GTX 1080TI TURBO 11GB 699€ (euros)

Which one is better investment for my money? Other components I have:

- Z170 PRO Gaming
- Intel Skylake i7-6700K
- EVGA 750W SuperNOVA 750 G2, 100% modular, 80 plus
- Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO GPU cooler
- Fractal Design Define R5 BlackOut ATX case

I would spend 700€ on a GPU only if it's a really good deal considering my whole PC cost me ~1500€

Both of those options are much cheaper than other versions of their models which makes me suspicious. I guess the gtx 1080 is just a good deal but not sure about the 1080ti... it needs 2 X 8 pin connection but it seems my PSU seems to have only 2 X 6 pin connections. And is my case big enough for these? I guess 750W is enough for both?

Both cards say they need 8 pin connector, but my PSU features state:

Key features:
- 750 W power supply, 90 % efficiency
- 80+ Gold certified
- 24-pin ATX connector for motherboard
- 4x PCIe connectors (6+2-pin)
- 9x SATA connectors
- 4x Molex connectors (4-pin)
- Modular cable design
- 140 mm fan
- Over-voltage, under-voltage, over-current, over-power, over-temperature and short-circuit protection

I don't see 8 pin connector there :o Or should I count 6+2= 8 pin connector?

this will work but most new psu kits come with several plug options if modular type :)

Found info that my case supports max 31cm long GPU so the gtx 1080TI won't fit because it's 44,6cm long. Gtx 1080 (this version) is only 28cm.

Probably still single screen but 4k would be nice and VR.

There are much smaller gtx 1080ti cards that fit into my case but they are over 800€ atm.

So I either pick gtx 1080 or I wait until gtx 1080TI prices drop under 600€.

I'm in the same boat Matt. I need new motherboard, processor, video card, and RAM. Crap... I need a whole new pc...

AMD Phenom II X4 955 3.20ghz
8 GB RAM
960 GTX

I get good frame rate in DX9, but it stutters unless I run vsync. DX11 same thing, good frame rate, but it stutters worse, plus it stutters in vsync as well.

Matt,
I have been looking out for the price to come down on a GTX 1080 and 1080Ti
Looking just know on Newegg's web site I found this sale on a EVGA GTX 1080 (I have always been partial to EVGA, I think they are good cards).
Check it out...

So I ended up buying Asus ROG Strix gtx 1080 8G gpu. Delivery takes some time so I probably still race few races with the old card. I hope the new card does it's job (giving me solid over 144 fps all the time, does handles Star Citizen and handles VR when I'm ready for it).

Yeah, I would love to have that card. I am sure it will crush anything you can throw at it.
