Endurance Racing?
« on: January 29, 2018, 11:42:52 pm »
I was curious if anyone racing in this league is interested in doing any form of endurance racing. I'm not recruiting for some other league. I would just like to know everyone's interest in doing maybe a 6 or 8 hour endurance race 1 time a year. Like maybe convince the admins, if there is any interest, to create a one off race of our version of a petit le mans. I've always been interested in pairing up with someone to do an endurance race. Or just any race longer than 2 hours. My favorite form of motorsport currently is IMSA, the Hankook 24hr series, blancpain, all forms of endurance motorsport are extremely interesting to me. I know that long of race can be quite hard for most of us responsible adults to be able to attend, but if it was something that we planned and worked on for 6 months before the race, getting a race day/time that would work for everyone shouldn't be too bad. I don't really have the time for something like that year round, but once a year, on a famous track like sebring, or le mans, even the nurb, would be fantastic and something I feel with months and months of planning could be worked out for everyones benefit that would be interested. I would personally donate any funds to make something like this work, servers, mods, whatever would be needed.

Like I said just a thought of mine, it may go down in flames, or not. I'm hoping not :)

Best of luck to you all in practice this week at Valencia!

I would love this! I used to race at VEC in RF1. I've raced 6, 8, and 12 hours races with a team of 4 drivers.

I like the idea. 6 hours with 3 drivers could be good.

Only problem I can see would be to get enough interest. I would imagine this requires almost 50 drivers. Plus is there good enough endurance mod around in rf2...
In order to win you need to be willing to roll the dice.

The idea of endurance racing has come up in the past. At those times it was determined that there simply were not enough drivers available to take part. Now that the league has more members I think we can start to entertain the idea again. Mixed class racing has always been my desire here too but the number of drivers has also made this difficult to do. We can again entertain this for the next series as well. But that is an entirely separate discussion.

I think a lower time endurance race with multiple driver teams would likely be more workable for the first race. something along the line of a 3 hour race with 3 drivers or a 4 hour race with 2 driver teams (Depending on how much time each driver wishes to driver per stint). Any longer than that and I think we will have less interest.

I will say that the 45 minute race felt like it flew by this last week. But the time on track is relative and for members coming from PC, AC or iracing where races tend to be around 15 minutes, a 45-60 Minute race IS an endurance race. Certainly when I started in Sim-racing some years ago a 60 minute race felt like FOREVER!!!!!!. But now it seems swift.

As we move through the GT3 Season we can assess the viability of a one off endurance race. (Mixed class racing has always been my desire here too but the number of drivers has also made this difficult to do.)

We could arrange 3-4 hours long endurance event to see how it goes. I think 6 prototype teams and 10 GT teams would be enough. So minimum of 32 drivers is required. Teams could have 2-4 drivers each (free choice). Stint lenght is probably limited to 45-60 mins due to tires. In 3 hours race one driver would need to do 45mins-1,5h depending on team size and in 4 hour race 1h-2h.

Possibility of technical failures are part of endurance racing. How good is rf2 simulating any (random) technical failures?

Definitely interested. Although I hope I won't screw it up for my teammates. :D

Also very interested. I may not be the fastest around but I'm consistent .

Cheers

We could do some single driver endurance races of 2 or 3 hours.

Or.... here's a weird idea...

If races can be "paused", do a 2 hour stint, and pause. Then, on another day, return, but switch drivers in a lottery. all the same drivers, but in different cars, randomly chosen. another 2 hour stint.

repeat.

Great idea.

What I would suggest is maybe run a 1 hour endurance simulation ( so a sped up day-to-night cycle within the hour) and give eople a taste of it. Wouldn't need as many drivers for that, and we could run a 4 track series so people could test out different classes)

The 2 URD mods would be perfect for that. There is only 1 LMP2 car though. If we used the absolutely awful Enduracer mod, I'd simply stick with the GTE class...either way I'd be in to that.

In my offline experience, with mechanical failures set to time scaled it's pretty accurate in terms of failures. Now it isn't perfect for every mod but I'm sure we could find one. I don't know how using mods for leagues works permission wise, but I have some experience with the enduracers mod for rfactor 2 and there are a plethora of cars and multiple classes. Any other mods anyone knows about suited for a multi class endurance race?

actually, i believer there are 2 LMPs in the URDs. audi and porsche.

however, we would still have the numbers problem for multiclass.

They have 4 LMP 1 cars, but only the 1 LMP2.

LMP 1 is kind of dumb since they are Hybrids and RF2 doesnt simulate that.

I haven't found a good LMP2 car yet. The Enduracers look good, but have the worst ffb I have felt in Rf2. It feels awful.

Why not just run it with the S397 GT3 cars?

Imo there definitely needs to be multiclass in endurance racing. Or did Rick mean that we could replace lmp2 with gt3?

You could combine mods. At racedepartment I've done races with a gt mod and a separate lmp (Rebellion in that case) together. Worked out quite well.

Tom's suggestion of 1 hour race with full day night cycle would be great as a try out of racing at dusk and dqwn. Night is quite ok but visibility at dusk and dawn is poor.
