rF2 - Install on SSD or HDD?
« on: May 12, 2017, 05:10:53 am »
I am setting up a new computer.
It has a 256GB SSD and a 2TB HDD.
What is the general consensus of where to store rF2?
I have seen videos saying to reserve the SSD for Windows and install all documents on HDD. The same video mentioned installing Steam to the HDD rather than the SSD. But I guess you can mess around within Steam so that even if Steam and most games are on HDD, you could still custom set rF2 to be on SSD.
I don't know if I really mind if rF2 takes an extra 1 or 2 seconds to load. And I'm worried that all the packages I keep downloading for rF2 are going to chew up the entire SSD. I also read something about micro stuttering from rF2 being installed on SSD that was cured by installing it on HDD instead.
But on the other hand, I'm worried that if I install rF2 in a "non-standard" location (like the HDD which will be D drive) that some of the mods may be expecting certain "standard" file folders and not work correctly.
Anyone have opinions, experience, recommendations?

i tried both, didnt see much difference, but it was an old build i dont know how it will work in dx11.
as far as mods you wont have any issues. mod packages are in the rfactor root folder and it loads everything from there, so as long as everything is in the "rfactor2" folder you wont have ANY issue

if you want to install steam games in other folders just create a new steam folder in other hard drive.
in steam: view>settings>steam library folders>add library or something like that.
my 2 cents :p
cheers

Would you mind listing how you do that? In steam, I can set a folder for storing games. But I'm not sure how I would set a folder to store the actual game on SSD and then set a different folder to store packages on HDD. That almost sounds like then the packages are not in the "root" rF2 folder.
I haven't actually tried to do this yet, so maybe it will become clear when I start tinkering.

Ive seem quite a lot of people testing this, nobody observed any percievable difference, it seems that the main difference in loading is actually CPU, because majority of the loading screen is initiating shaders, compiling physics code and **** like that.

The only perceivable difference is going to be load times. Simply because an SSD going to be able to read faster. It won't need to waste time searching the disk. Once you're passed the loading screen the disk isn't much of a factor.

Personally I have a system SSD 120GB and a 3TB mechanical. I have steam itself installed on the G:\ (game) drive. That way all Steam games default to that larger drive.

Using separate application like Crew Cheif I had to point the settings to G instead of C but its a simple task. Otherwise plugins just work because they're in the game folder. If the game runs, the plugins run.

You don't want a speedy drive or you're going to miss patches all over the green when you're cutting the lawn!!! Boom.

yup, the game builds a cache and renders the whole thing at once.
you see noticeable differences in loading times when games rely heavily on decompressing chunks and texture streaming.
worst culprit could be the battlefield series, and open world games like the witcher 3.
i tested BOTH and there was nothing much to gain that justified losing 50gb on my ssd.

Quick question regarding steam on a SSD and the steamapps on HDD.

I put Steam on the SSD and all the Steam-content (rf2) on the HDD. Until 2 days ago it worked perfect. Now, somehow, Steam wants to install rf2 again, which it does on the SSD. I thought the entire game was on HDD (the entire 'Common' folder is located on the HDD). I couldn't play rf2 without going the entire install process.  In the end it worked fine, although all my content was elsewhere (so no cars, skins, tracks...). I figured that by deleting the rf2 game on the SSD and redirecting Steam to the HDD, it would work again. It failed however, so I'm currently re-installing rf2 for a second time.

I don't get why steam suddenly wants to install the game again, unless the recent steam-update messed something up. I could just redirect the content in rf2 (packages) to the HDD, but I would still have rf2 installed in 2 locations.
Is it better to have to game on the SSD and only the packages on the HDD?
If not, how can I get back to the entire game on the HDD?

All this **** messes with my training, which is already limited this week.

Wow, sorry to hear about your troubles.
All I can tell you is that I opted to save EVERYTHING on the HDD and nothing on the SSD. So steam, all it's games (including rF2) and therefore all the rF2 mods and workshop files all download to the HDD by default.
As others have pointed out, there doesn't seem to be any slowdown penalty for this after the initial loading screen.

However, if you are also into flight sims where scenery is loaded "on the fly" (ha good one Paul), then that could be an argument for putting it on the SSD.
But I think my advice would just be put it all on the HDD.

My entire steam install and all games are on my HDD. the only programs on my SSD are the OS and some minor programs that tale little space.  I don't understand why steam would have decided it did not like your installation of rfactor 2. Is it possible that you logged in on a separate account or just simply weren't logged in at all?

I was logged in and I have only one account. So I don't get what happened.  I did notice that suddenly I had to folder in the download section (one on the SSD and one on the HDD) and I think it happened with a Steam- update.
I'll try to move Steam to the HDD this evening. According to their site, it's doable.
