Richard Lee - car undecided.

Please sign me up. I can't take part in many races due to family stuff and other commitments but I'll join in when I can get away! Cheers  :)

General Discussion / Re: First Impression Oculus Rift
« on: November 19, 2017, 10:43:30 pm »
Hey All :), I picked up a Rift recently too (£370 in UK). Interesting reading all your comments. I have similar PC spec to you Gerry (i7-4770/GTX970) and was worried about performance but it's not too bad as asynchronous projection kicks in when it dips below 90FPS. Ideally want to keep it above 90 but just not possible with this GPU. Tried fiddling about and optimising graphical settings. 1.3 supersampling is the most I can go to without killing FPS. The immersion is pretty amazing but I have problem with motion-sickness too. Can do about 2 hours max before feeling unwell.

Tom, Chad, Excuse me but I've just got in and I'm slightly drunk. So maybe I'm misunderstanding your humour? I wonder if you thin  I make money from my YT vids? JUst to let you know I don't monetised my vids. I spend hours of my free-time making them because I enjoy it and hope others enjoy watching. Same reason as you make yours, Tom. I also spend hours of my free time practicing and racing with you guys - because I enjoy it.

I had the courtesy to ask everyone via the forum if it was ok to record our races. Other members have streamed and posted videos and didn't bother asking. Chad asked me not to upload anything that would put VRC in a bad light - I don't believe I have. Someone asked me not to post them on the forum. So I don't. I've been respectful to everyone.

Interesting to read everyone's thoughts and experiences with the beta. Chad, glad to hear they fixed the issue with AMD cards. Seems like you AMD guys always get shafted one way or another!!

Using Ultra PPE, I was getting 70-90FPS in-game but on TV cam it would drop to 30-40FPS. I since found that turning down anisotropic filtering from x16 to x8 and lowering some other in-game graphical settings made a big difference in performance.

Some of the effects look awesome on tracks that have 'proper' lighting installed. Misano looks especially atmospheric at night. I made a vid if anyone wants to check it out.

Michael, I think you're right. It shouldn't effect network once loaded. Having a full grid of cars with 4K skins uses more resources on everyone's PC. That's probably the reason why I was told to use 2K skins for online.

Sneak peek. The effects look nice and adds depth. Everything still has a 'muddy' look to it tho'.

I tend to stick with 2K skins for online races - for the reasons you mentioned.

I worked out how to get the alpha layer working. I was doing everything right apart from missing one step when saving the .dds file  - which meant the alpha layer wasn't active. Hence every skin had the fill gloss effect on as default.

You can see the difference. The first 2 pics are default and the last 2 are with the alpha active. I made the red trim full matt which now really pops like a fluorescent colour. The white is mostly matt and I left the black full gloss.

Michael, thanks for that  :) I knew it had to be another name for it!!! Simon, thx. I think it's the shader layer I need to work with.

I found out the two sides of the Aston aren't perfectly symmetrical. I did the trim for one side and flipped it but it doesn't quite fit.

Had similar problem with the Apex SLS last season. The template was slightly rotated off-centre. So after doing one side I had to copy, flip and rotate by 0.3 degrees to get it to line up. But at least the two sides were symmetrical.

Simon, your skins are awesome  8) Your Porsche looked great on track. I started making a skin for my Arthur Martin - I downloaded the template from the URD site. There are PSD files for the body, wing, windows and windscreen banner.

I can't work out how to replace the banner. The file is called "AM_EGT_banner" - but adding "banner" to the .dds file name doesn't work. So I'm thinking there must be another name for it. Any idea? I've noticed you haven't changed the banner on your skins.

Also, any idea how the alpha channels work? The car is looking out too shiny/glossy all over - I'd like to add some matt details.

Cheers,
Rich

I'll go with the Aston Merlin. Seems to be the most stable and neutral out of the cars I tested.

VRC rf2 fun runs / Re: VRC Fun Run Group C at Bugatti

I meant the semi-automatic paddle option specifically. You keep your foot planted and it shifts seamlessly like a modern car. On the manual paddle option you have to lift on upshifts. Too early back on the gas and clutch is not engaged - have to lift again. Easy to lose time. I'm 2-3 seconds slower using the manual paddle option, but getting better with practice.

The semi-automatic is way easier and faster. No need to lift, no fear of messing shifts. Just concentrate on braking and accelerating, like you said. Too much of an unfair advantage compared to H-shifting I think. I'll race with the manual paddles and no assists.

Hi Erik, welcome. Your name seemed familiar. You're in my G+ circle (RTR-Banger)!! TBH, I don't use G+ much but I've seen your posts - I know you're a big GT racing fan and experienced sim racer. Look forward to sharing the track with you.
